How We Test & Score Password Managers

Last updated: November 2025

Our Editorial Mission

ClearCloudSafe's goal is to provide the most trustworthy, actionable guidance on password security. Every review and recommendation comes from hands-on testing performed by cybersecurity practitioners with experience in identity and access management.

We assess each password manager across more than 50 data points spanning security architecture, privacy guarantees, usability, platform coverage, and business readiness. Scores are updated whenever vendors ship significant changes.

Security (30%)

Encryption models, zero-knowledge design, passkey readiness, MFA options, breach monitoring, and incident history.

Privacy (20%)

Data residency, audits, offline access, export controls, and third-party tracking policies.

Features (20%)

Autofill quality, password health dashboards, breach alerts, secure sharing, passkey support, and additional tools.

Cross-Platform UX (15%)

Desktop and mobile apps, browser extensions, sync reliability, onboarding, and migration workflows.

Value for Money (10%)

Pricing transparency, free plans or trials, family and business tiers, and refund policies.

Support & Documentation (5%)

Live support coverage, response times, knowledge base depth, and incident communication history.

Our Testing Process

  1. Environment Setup: Install apps on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux test devices. Configure browser extensions in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
  2. Account Creation: Enroll using personal and business tiers to evaluate onboarding, import flows, and shared vault configuration.
  3. Security Validation: Verify encryption defaults, key derivation settings, biometric unlock, passkey support, MFA options, and breach monitoring alerts.
  4. Feature Stress Tests: Execute password imports, generate passphrases, test autofill accuracy across 20+ websites, and trial password sharing workflows.
  5. Support Audit: Submit real support tickets and measure response quality, escalation paths, and documentation clarity.
  6. Score Calibration: Compare findings against historical data and peer benchmarks to maintain consistent scoring.

Data Sources We Rely On

Hands-on lab testing performed by ClearCloudSafe analysts.

Vendor documentation, security whitepapers, and transparency reports.

Third-party audits, SOC 2 or ISO attestations, and bug bounty program activity.

User community feedback, app store reviews, and enterprise case studies.

Responsible disclosure databases and public incident reports.

Pricing sheets, master service agreements, and reseller terms.

Keeping Scores Up to Date

We run quarterly regression tests and ad-hoc reviews whenever vendors release major features, pricing changes, or incident disclosures. Each update is logged with a change note so readers know what has evolved since the prior review.

Automated monitors track status pages and security advisories.

Scorecards reflect the latest product version tested in our lab.

We re-run pricing comparisons monthly to capture seasonal promotions.

Any adjustments are reviewed by a second analyst before publication.

Independence & Corrections Policy

Affiliate partnerships do not influence our scoring. Analysts do not accept gifts, sponsored travel, or compensation from vendors. If we discover an error, we publish a correction note and update the affected score within 48 hours.
